This assignment is the first of two assignments that will lead to your final project paper for this course. Your final paper will be an integrated analysis of the effects of globalization on the topics of systems, organizational learning, and change in your area of specialization.

In this assignment, use the background material on globalization along with the theoretical material on systems, learning organizations, and change to draft an analysis of the way globalization affects organizational planning. The draft will serve as background material for a more focused assignment in Unit 9 that will integrate your journal entries with your analysis of globalization into your final project.

Readings and Media

From Local to Global: Classroom, Community, Country

As an educational leader and action scientist, your perspective will need to encompass a wide variety of levels at which global factors affect the learning organization. For a broader understanding of the different levels, read the following sections of your Senge text Schools That Learn:

·         Section 8, pages 319–329, "Entering School."

·         Section 13, pages 462–472, "Moving into Community."

·         Section 16, pages 558–578, "The Systems Citizen."

Pay particular attention to the listening, collaboration, and persuasion skills that you will need to plan for and bring about organizational learning in this new world.

Re-read Chapter 8, "Appreciative Inquiry," pages 55–62 in Cooperrider and Whitney's Appreciative Inquiry: A Positive Revolution in Change.

Differing Views of Globalization

Two videos are presented below that address the topic of globalization and provide radically different perspectives on it. As in an earlier unit, you are invited here to view both sides of the globalization issue, to apply your own principles of critical thinking to it, and to decide what aspects of the different views warrant your support. Both videos will contribute to your understanding of globalization and its effects on planning in your specialization.

·         Watch the 2010 Williams College video, Thomas Friedman: The World Is Flat (Transcript).

·         Watch the 2012 RT News clip, Chris Hedges: "We Are Witnessing the Collapse of Globalization (Transcript).

As always, you should listen to the arguments put forth and apply the critical principles you have learned in both the Paul and Elder Critical Thinking text and in the Booth, W et.al. text The Craft of Research.
