4. If you were preparing to enter a nursing home, what five personal items would you consider most important for your comfort and well-being? Contact a local nursing home and ask about the types of personal belongings permitted in the facility.
- Do you, your parents, or grandparents have long-term care insurance? Why or why not? Contact a broker who sells this type of policy and inquire about its purchase. Compare rates and benefits among various policies.
Medical Care
- Gather information about a Medicare demonstration project and summarize it. When did the project begin? What geographical areas are involved? What are the expected outcomes, and what has been observed so far? How is the project funded?
- Many hospitals reach out to serve the special needs of elders. Find out what special services are offered to elders by the hospitals in your community. Find out whether your community
has an ambulatory surgery center. If it does, call or visit one to find out what services it offers.
- Debate the pros and cons of the statement “Medical care is the right of all individuals in the United States, regardless of ability to pay.”
