Grade Descriptor |
Indicative characteristic/s |
Contextualisation |
M1 Identify and apply strategies to find appropriate solutions |
Effective judgements have been made. An effective approach to study and research has been applied. |
Suitable c When a decision has been made to use a particular tool or technique. Mention any alternatives that could have also been used. |
M2 Select/design and apply appropriate methods/techniques |
Complex information/data has been synthesised and processed. Appropriate learning methods/techniques have been applied. |
|
M3 Present and communicate appropriate findings |
The appropriate structure and approach has been used. The communication is appropriate for unfamiliar audiences and appropriate media have been used. |
Present your assignment with an appropriate structure, ensuring that the assignment flows between the different tasks. |
D1 Use critical reflection to evaluate own work and justify valid conclusions |
Conclusions have been arrived at through synthesis of ideas and have been justified. The validity of results have been evaluated using defined criteria.
|
When a decision has been made to use a particular tool or technique. Mention any alternatives that could have also been used and justify your choice of tools and techniques. Task 2 produce a VSM and FSM for Whizper pumps, why do we use a VSM? What are the alternatives?
|
D2 Take responsibility for managing and organising activities |
Activities have been planned. Autonomy has been demonstrated. |
|
D3 Demonstrate convergent/lateral/creative thinking |
Ideas have been generated and decisions taken. Problems have been solved. Creative thought has been applied. |
This needs to be demonstrated throughout the assignment |
Please note that for unit assignments Assessors should use these or other exemplar indicative characteristics for the individual grade descriptors from Annexe C of the HN specification or any other relevant indicative characteristics for the particular assignment. The indicative characteristic should then be contextualised. Only one indicative characteristic per grade descriptor, M2, M2, M3, D1, D2, D3 is required

Manufacturing planning and Scheduling Principles – Assignment 1 |
Purpose of this assignment To apply suitable and appropriate process planning and scheduling tools as to allow Whizper pump to produce enough pumps per year as well as planning for 5 future years of growth. |
|
Scenario This Assignment will give you an opportunity to experience the process of investigating a product design and preparing for its manufacture. You will need to identify key factors to be taken into consideration The Whizper pump company has accepted your design and now wishes to commence manufacture. The company has an empty building with full services which can be used. The company is conversant with a range of modern manufacturing methods, processes and strategies and wishes to produce 150,000 pumps per year with a growth rate of 10% per annum for 5 years. You are expected to produce a report detailing the manufacturing processes, plan and equipment required. Marks will be awarded for; § Identify the major manufacturing processes § Production plan and route cards, demonstrating reasonable manufacturing data as in a real life scenario § Layout of production cells § Should be planned for good material flow, logical movement of labour and have in process inspection § The labour requirements should be outlined, including costing estimate of the production process |
|
Task 1 (LO1 AC1.1, 1.2 &1.3) Using various planning tools and techniques available such as Gantt charts, Network diagrams, Kanban, JIT, MRP, MRP2 etc. Identify the major manufacturing processes; produce Production plans and route cards, demonstrating reasonable manufacturing data as in a real life scenario |
|
Task 2 (LO2 AC 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, 4.1 & 4.2) Using the Whizper pump scenario and making suitable assumptions produce a VSM and FSM for the company (Whizper pumps). Also produce production schedules and process plans for Whizper pumps. |
|
Task 3 (LO3 AC3.1 & 3.2) State and compare at least 2 different methods of group classification as applied within the manufacturing environment. |
Evidence checklist |
Summary of evidence required by student |
Evidence presented |
Task 1, 2 & 3 |
Produce a formal assignment written in 3rd person past tense and including page numbers. Your work must include a cover page, contents, introduction, main body and a conclusion. A bibliography with references must be supplied using the Harvard System of referencing.
An electronic copy of your assignment entered in Moodle, plus a printed, bounded hard copy handed to the lecturer. |
