Discussion 1: Multiple ethical theories espouse the reasons for and the meaning of the study of ethics. Much of philosophy is seen by the public as either difficult to understand or impossible to comprehend. The required textbook chapters and the Morality article explore several ethical theories in depth (Lykan, 2001). In this discussion post, evaluate the value of any one of the ethical theories examined thus far in the course, and explain the actions it would take by all individuals to put the theory into action. List the positives and negatives for society by following this ethical theory. Your initial post should be at least 500 words in length not counting any references you include.
Guided Response: Examine all of the ethical theories available, and provide a sound analysis of the pros and cons of the theories. Provide a “best practices” list among the theories you review to provide the best outcomes to produce moral actions.
Discussion 2: The required textbook chapters and the “An Extended Conception of Rationality and Moral Actions” article discuss moralism and rational choice (Roh, 2003). For this discussion, explain the significance of criminal justice professionals accepting the importance of moral actions in their professions. Can the greater good be served by people merely doing what they are told is morally right, or must professionals actually accept and believe in the need for moral conduct in order to best serve the effective administration of criminal justice agencies? Provide at least of one example to support your conclusion. Your initial post should be at least 500 words in length not counting any references you include.
Guided Response: Are laws and regulations intentionally ethical or written to produce moral actions? If not, does pragmatism and public protection lend itself to non-ethical philosophies or actions? Should criminal justice professionals adhere to a personal code or moral conduct, or should there be a formal code of conduct required for criminal justice professionals?
