Leadership’s Relationship to Management

Analyze relationships and differences between leadership and managerial behaviors

and their potential impact on achievement of organizational goals.

Prerequisites:

Before beginning this competency, you must complete the following Competency:

 LM001: Leadership Frameworks and Theories

Competency Description:

As people practice and study leadership, there is often confusion about the relationships and differences

between leadership and management. For leaders and managers to achieve excellence, they need to

have a clear understanding of how these roles are different, where the roles might overlap, and how both

roles can often exist within an individual’s job description—sometimes to good effect and other times for

the worse.

For this Short Answer Assessment, you will review three leadership business cases and

reflect on your professional and personal leadership experiences. You will answer a series of

short answer items to demonstrate your understanding of the relationships and differences

between leadership and managerial behaviors and their potential impact on achievement of

organizational goals. You will answer general questions about each case to demonstrate your

knowledge of formal leadership best practices and theoretical frameworks and concepts. You

will also answer personal reflection questions based on your leadership and management

experiences and compare them with best practices and leadership concepts. Understanding

key characteristics of strong leaders and common traits shared by great managers, and

knowing how these two important roles interact, will prepare you for excellence in your

career.
