Obesity Obesity is a chronic issue facing many Americans today and the trend is on the rise. According to The Obesity Society (2016), "69 percent of US. adults are categorized as being affected by obesity or having excess weight" (para 4).Obesity is defined as a condition of a person having an excessive amount of body fat. This condition is shown to create other serious medical conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and stroke to name a few. Obesity can develop from not only environmental and genetic factors, but behavioral factors. Obesity can be hard to control by dieting and exercise alone. Obesity Clinics "For people with obesity, weight loss based solely on lifestyle changes can be very difficult to achieve and even more challenging to maintain" (The Obesity Society, 2016, para 8). Obesity clinics have been around for quite some time and are on the rise as more Americans are challenged by this disease. Obesity clinics can provide a complete assortment of services from qualified and experienced providers to assist an obese person to reach weight loss goals. Clinics offer evaluation, individualized treatment plans, medications, and access to specialty care (endocrinologists, registered dietitians, physical therapists, psychologists, bariatric surgeons), as well as follow-up care. Obesity clinics provide a valuable service by having all of these resources available in one convenient location. Communication by the different providers also enables more appropriate treatment plans for each individual patient.
