Cyber Threats Executive Summary
Some examples of current cyber technology are: the internet, military databases and infrastructures, satellites, and e-mail. Cyber technology is always at risk of threat from cybercriminals. Cybercriminals are those who use computer technology and networks to commit criminal acts. These criminal acts can be committed from virtually any location where the cybercriminal has a computer and a network. The anonymity of the internet gives many cybercriminals the opportunity to commit cybercrimes without being detected or found after the fact.
Some of the more common forms of cyber threats that have emerged from existing global technology are: phishing, malware, and spam attacks (Ford, nd.). The most common way in which cybercriminals are using these technologies to attack is through e-mail. Another contemporary cyber threat occurs when a hacker calls and advises there is a computer issue and they are calling from an anti-virus company. The hacker then tries to get the would-be victim to allow them remote access to the computer to “fix the problem” but really they gather identifying and financial information.
If global technology is going to stay in the fight against threats of cybercrime, it will have to evolve and the development of safeguards will have to be put into place. Safeguards such as firewall protection, anti-virus software, and other similar programs are a great place to start building a foundation. These safeguards are already being used and frequent updates maintain a degree of safety for users.
Probably the most important facet that will safeguard the masses from threat of cybercrime is education. Those who use the internet, e-mail, and any other global technology should be educated in proper usage and threats. “As the old saying goes give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime”. references The same is true when it comes to educating others about proper use of the internet and cyber threats.
The best way to educate people about the threats associated with cybercrime is in a pyramid format. Beginning with those in the computer and networking community and filtering down. Law enforcement is a great tool for filtering information into the community. Anytime someone feels they are in any way victimized, they contact their local law enforcement agency. If the police are well versed in the threats, cybercrime statutes, and safeguards they can filter educational information on to those who have been victimized. Then, those who have been victims of cybercrime are another resource for educating the public.
Another way to educate the public about the threats of cybercrime is through informational websites and social media posts. Millions of people across the globe use social media and are active on a daily basis in the world of social media. Frequent posts from trusted sources can be shared and circulated through social media to get information out to those who would learn from it and forward it on to more people.
The use of global technology to commit cybercrimes is real and ever-evolving. With all the benefits that come from global technology, so too are there an equal amount of threats. As with traditional crime, cybercrime can be fought through education and safeguards. When it comes to traditional crime, people learn about prevention and reporting through word of mouth and education. Victims of cybercrime can help and be helped in this endeavor in similar ways but the use of global technology can spread this useful information on a much larger scale.
