Wk 5 - Measures of Comparison Case Study Presentation [due Mon]

Assignment Content

  1. Read the following hypothetical case study:

A cohort study of smoking and bladder cancer was conducted on a small island population. The island had a total population of 1,000 people, and 400 of them were smokers and 600 were not smokers. 50 of the smokers and 10 of the non-smokers developed bladder cancer.

Create a Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation that includes a minimum of 16 slides, with 2 slides per prompt for each of the following prompts:

    • Outline the concepts of correlations and causation.
    • Present the case data using a 2-by-2 table (see textbook reading for this week) that includes labeled cells and margins.
    • Select 1–2 measures of comparison (look at table 3.5) that could be used to describe the relative effect of smoking on the risk of bladder cancer.
    • Write the formula for this measure of comparison and calculate the measure of comparison using the data in the case. Explain your answer.
    • Explain why your selected measure of comparison was appropriate to describe the relative and/or absolute effect of smoking on the risk of bladder cancer.
    • Justify your statements.
    • Write a conclusion by answering this question: Is the excess risk of disease among the total population generally larger or smaller than the excess risk of disease among exposed persons? Explain your answer.
    • Comment on the relationship between smoking and bladder cancer in terms of causation and correlations.
    • In your PowerPoint, be sure to: Calculate the measure of comparison using the data in the case. Explain your answer.
    • Interpret the results, explain, and justify your findings based on the results derived.
